Is a Heated Driveway Worth It in Toronto?

In Toronto, a heated driveway is worth it mostly for comfort, since what you save on snow clearing adds up to little beside what the install costs up front. Snow removal across the GTA runs $450 to $900 per winter under contract, while a published estimate puts a 600 sq ft electric system at roughly $160 to $420 a winter to run. An install of that size starts around $12,000 at the low end.

Toronto's Yearly Snowfall

At Pearson, the average is 114.5 cm of snow each year, spread over 44.7 days that see at least a light dusting. Days with 5 cm or more come along only about 7 times a year. So on most snowy days, the system is only clearing a light fall rather than a big storm.

What Do Electric and Hot Water Systems Cost to Install?

There are two types of system. Electric puts heating cables beneath the surface. Hydronic sends warm liquid, typically glycol, through tubing fed by a gas boiler.

Ontario installers publish electric at $30 to $50 per sq ft and hydronic at $40 to $60. A second GTA source quotes a broader spread, with electric systems running $20 to $60 per sq ft and glycol ones $60 to $95. For size, a standard single driveway runs about 400 sq ft and a double about 600 sq ft.

Here is how those published ranges look once installed for the two common driveway sizes:

Driveway sizeElectric system, installedHydronic system, installed
Single driveway, 400 sq ft$8,000–$24,000$16,000–$38,000
Double driveway, 600 sq ft$12,000–$36,000$24,000–$57,000

These figures come from published prices, not from a quote. The installer confirms the final number after visiting the site.

The Cost of Running It Per Snowfall

These figures assume the system runs for 4 to 6 hours each time it snows. A real storm could take more or less time. With electric, your electricity plan drives the cost. Time-of-Use is the plan whose price shifts with the hour of the day, starting at 9.1¢ per kWh in off-peak hours and climbing to 18.9¢ when demand peaks, as of 1 November 2026. A kWh is simply the unit your hydro bill measures electricity in.

Here is the per-storm cost for the two driveway sizes:

Driveway sizeElectric, each stormGas hydronic, each storm
Single driveway, 400 sq ft$7–$23$2–$3
Double driveway, 600 sq ft$11–$34$3–$5

Running on gas is cheaper because heat from an efficient Enbridge gas boiler works out to roughly 2.9¢ per kWh, before HST, using Enbridge rates from 1 October 2026.

Your Electricity Plan Shifts the Bill a Lot

With an electric driveway, the hour matters as much as the snow itself. Here is what clearing a single storm from a 600 sq ft driveway costs under each plan:

Plan (and its hours)Cost per storm, 600 sq ft
Ultra-Low Overnight plan, 11 p.m.–7 a.m.$4–$7
Time-of-Use plan, off-peak (evenings, nights and weekends)$11–$16
Tiered, first 1,000 kWh monthly$13–$20
Time-of-Use plan, mid-peak (weekdays 11 a.m.–5 p.m.)$18–$26
Time-of-Use plan, on-peak (weekdays 7–11 a.m. and 5–7 p.m.)$23–$34
Ultra-Low Overnight on-peak, weekdays 4–9 p.m.$45–$68

If the system runs during your plan's peak hours, clearing the same snowfall will cost more.

How It Compares With Hiring Snow Clearing

In the GTA, snow clearing costs $450 to $900 for a seasonal contract, or $60 to $110 if you pay per visit. A 600 sq ft electric driveway is estimated to cost $160 to $420 a winter to run, which is less than a seasonal contract. But that saving has to pay back an install of $12,000 to $36,000, so on money alone it would take many years to break even.

The case is stronger if you expect to stay in the home long term and like the idea of a clear driveway without waiting on a plow. A properly sized system can keep up with even heavy snow, up to about 2 inches an hour.

Smaller Options Worth a Look

A heated walkway is far cheaper to run than a full driveway. Running a 100 sq ft electric walkway works out to about $0.46 per hour off-peak, and closer to $0.95 when demand peaks. Portable snow melting mats offer a different route, at about $54 per sq ft, and you only put them down in the spots that need them.

Common Questions

What Are the Drawbacks of a Heated Driveway?

The price is the big one. With electric, timing matters too: on the Ultra-Low Overnight plan, one storm cleared from a single driveway in the plan's 4 to 9 p.m. peak window runs $30 to $45.

How Many Years Does a Heated Driveway Last?

One manufacturer reports electric snow melt systems lasting more than 30 years, with a hydronic boiler at 20 to 25 years. With hydronic, plan on the boiler needing replacement at some point during the driveway's life.

Are heated driveways worth the money?

On dollars alone, rarely. Hiring a clearing service avoids the large installation bill, and whether heating eventually saves money depends on your running costs and how long you use it. But if you want a safe, clear driveway without lifting a shovel, and you plan to stay in the house for years, that comfort may well be worth paying for.
