Heated Walkway and Steps in Toronto

In Toronto, a heated walkway of about 100 square feet costs somewhere between $2,500 and $4,375, and a short set of front stairs with three to five risers costs $6,000 to $12,000. Both figures come from one Ontario installer's guide, so ask what your quote includes before comparing costs. A riser is the vertical piece between two steps, so three to five risers describes a short stair leading to a front entrance.

Heated Walkway Prices

A walkway from the sidewalk to the door covers little ground, which is what keeps the bill modest. Precision Landscaping quotes $2,500 to $4,375 for a 100 sq ft heated walkway, and $3,000 to $5,500 for a heated garage apron, the paved strip right outside a garage door.

The Ontario installer's guide recommends electric heating for smaller areas, up to about 500 square feet. A walkway, an apron or a set of steps sits far below that limit.

Item heatedPrice installed
Path, about 100 square feet$2,500–$4,375
Stairs, three to five risers$6,000–$12,000
Apron outside the garage$3,000–$5,500
Portable mats for melting snow$54 for each square foot

When interlocking stone forms the walkway surface, the mats or coils rest in the bedding sand underneath the pavers, and the pavers then go back on top. That same industry guide favours permeable pavers, meaning pavers whose joints let melt water drain straight down instead of gathering on the surface.

Running Costs for a Heated Walkway

For a path of this size, the running cost is low. A 100 sq ft electric walkway costs roughly 46¢ an hour to run at the off-peak rate and 95¢ an hour at the on-peak rate.

Off-peak is the lower rate. It applies through winter weekday nights and evenings, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., and across the whole weekend. The Ontario Energy Board fixes the off-peak rate at 9.1¢ per kWh, and the higher on-peak rate of 18.9¢ per kWh covers weekday mornings between 7 and 11 a.m. and early evenings between 5 and 7 p.m.. Your running cost depends on when the system operates, and these are the time-of-use rates the Ontario Energy Board has already set for this winter, from November 1, 2026.

How long the heat stays on follows the snow. Warmup budgets 4 hours of operation for a single day of snow, while Floor Heating Systems counts 6 hours for a single snowfall. Since the walkway costs less than a dollar for each hour of use, even the higher figure adds up to only a few dollars. Toronto Pearson logs 44.7 days a year with at least 0.2 cm of snow, 7.2 of them with 5 cm or greater, so the system is not working every day of winter.

Heated Steps in Toronto

Heating front steps costs more than heating a flat path: Precision Landscaping quotes $6,000 to $12,000 for three to five heated risers, against $2,500 to $4,375 for a 100 sq ft walkway.

The heating lives inside the steps, not on their surface. WarmlyYours installs electric snow melting for outdoor stairs in concrete, in asphalt, or in the mortar beneath pavers and natural stone, so both poured concrete steps and stone-faced steps can carry it. When an installer measures the job, the treads and landings are counted together as one heated zone, which explains why a flight topped by a wide landing runs higher than the step count alone implies.

After installation, the steps take care of themselves. Automatic controls sense the snow and turn the heat on to clear it, so no one needs to be up when it starts falling.

If rebuilding your steps isn't an option, portable snow-melting mats are another route. Portable mats cost about $54 per square foot.

Adding Heat to an Existing Walkway and Steps

Because the cable sits beneath the surface, the simplest time to add heating is when a walkway or set of steps is being rebuilt. Warmup outlines two ways to retrofit heating into a driveway or path that already exists, and an installer will tell you on the visit which suits the paving in place.

When a driveway is heated too, planning the walkway and steps as one project makes sense. Electric cable fits these small spaces, and pricing it all together means the controls and wiring get planned just once.

Permits and Paperwork

Two documents may come into play. A notification of work has to reach the Electrical Safety Authority before any electrical job starts, and outdoor heating cable falls under that rule.

Toronto requires a street work permit for driveway work that crosses City property. It's worth asking the installer to confirm the property line and whether the planned work needs a City permit.
